Bedrooms & suites

We have a variety of bedrooms here at Maesbrook to support our residents’ varying needs; each one of our 44 single bedrooms is designed to provide the utmost comfort and tranquility.

Our light and airy accommodation includes five separate suites, each named after historical figures with a close connection to Shrewsbury; Charles Darwin, Mary Webb, Jelicoe and The Lady Dunn Suite in memory of a remarkable wartime resident, read more below.

All our beds are designed for maximum comfort, and for residents who are less mobile, we also offer an automatic mattress turning system which gently repositions the user as required. This significantly reduces the risk of developing painful pressure sores which might require hospitalisation.

Along with the rest of our home, all the bedrooms and bathrooms at Maesbrook are maintained to the highest standards of hygiene to prevent infections.

The Lady Dunn Suite

The Lady Dunn Suite is named in honor of Lady Joan Dunn, a former resident who passed away in 2018 at the age of 100. Lady Dunn’s extraordinary life and character deeply impacted all who cared for her, prompting the home to dedicate the suite to her memory.

Born in England, Lady Dunn had a fascinating upbringing. She studied piano in Munich and later perfected her French in Paris. During the rise of Nazi Germany, she was a firsthand witness to significant historical events, including seeing Hitler at the Royal Opera House and observing the Munich Agreement in 1938 from the Strangers Gallery in the Houses of Commons. As World War II began, she worked for the ARP (Air Raid Precautions) before joining the Foreign Office, where her work unexpectedly led her into the world of secret intelligence.

Lady Dunn was recruited by MI5, initially working at Bletchley Park in the Secret Intelligence Service’s Naval Intelligence Department 9, handling decoded messages. She later transferred to MI6 in St Albans. During this time, she encountered Kim Philby, who would later be exposed as a KGB spy. Despite her important role in intelligence, Lady Dunn never spoke of her work, revealing her story only in later years.

In 1943, she married Captain George Dennehy, who became a solicitor after the war. Following his death in 1990, she remarried Sir Robin Dunn in 1997. Over her lifetime, Lady Dunn was a proud matriarch, with four daughters, 16 grandchildren, and over 30 great-grandchildren, spanning seven generations.

The Lady Dunn Suite at Maesbrook offers a spacious, luxurious environment with a large bedroom, en-suite bathroom, and lounge area. It is designed to provide comfort and a touch of elegance, complete with woodland views and abundant natural light.

“We wanted to dedicate the suite to Lady Dunn as a meaningful way to honor her fascinating legacy for years to come,” said Nigel Godman, Manager of Maesbrook Care Home. “Viewings can be arranged for anyone who may be interested in this lovely suite.”
