Mary Webb Society
Maesbrook Care Home is closely affiliated with the Mary Webb Society, which celebrates the life and works of romance novelist and poet, Mary Webb. Born in the Shropshire village of Leighton, near Shrewsbury, Mary lived at Maesbrook from 1902 onwards.
She spent much of her time exploring the countryside around the area, which provided much of the inspiration for her works, and she even married her husband, Henry Bertram Law Webb, at our local Holy Trinity Church in Meole Brace.
Mary is best known for her novels Gone to Earth, which was dramatized as a film in 1950, and Precious Bane, which has been adapted as a television drama several times. Her accounts of rural life in Shropshire are also thought to have inspired the parody novel Cold Comfort Farm, by Stella Gibbons.
